Our new programme is designed to provide a boost for those aged 19-23, who have an interest or passion in health and fitness and may have found themselves looking for a new focus during these unprecedented times of COVID-19, or simply just want to get their future careers into shape.
The one-year study programme combines modern academic study (Level 3 Diploma in Fitness Instructing and Physical Activity) that incorporates a national recognised fitness instructor qualification, practical hands-on learning with industry professionals, work experience, support in achieving further additional leisure industry qualifications, course enrichment and a inclusive sports, fitness membership package for the duration of the course.
This main focus of this programme is to provide learners with the skills, experience and qualifications to prepare them for an apprenticeships, university placement (foundation degree) or employment within the many exciting roles of the leisure, fitness and sport industries.
Upon successful completion of the course, learners will also be rewarded with a bursary of up to £500 to get kitted out and get their careers up and running.
LEARNER ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Learners must be aged between 19-23 and have not previously enrolled onto or completed another Level 3 qualification.
WEEKLY LEARNER HOURS
The study programme will consist of between 10-18 hours per week of learning and enrichment which can be tailored around learners’ part-time work commitments.
You will develop a portfolio of evidence through a combination of both theory, and practical learning, along with multiple choice assessments.
This 1 year programme is currently available for 20 learners across Norwich, Lowestoft, Gt Yarmouth & Sheffield locations.
OVERVIEW OF STUDY
Learners will study towards a core qualification of a Level 3 Diploma in Fitness Instructing and Physical Activity which will consist of the following nine units.
Principles of anatomy, physiology and fitness
Planning and instructing gym-based exercise
Health and safety in a physical activity, fitness and sport
Delivering exceptional customer care
Enterprise and entrepreneurship
Marketing products and services
Technology in sport and exercise
Managing personal and professional development
Planning and instructing outdoor fitness sessions

Through one to one mentoring, group discussions, guest speakers and practical experiences we support our learners in maximising their employability along with the awareness and skills to effectively handle issues and problems they may encounter in the future life at home, socially and at work.
PATHWAY EXIT ROUTES
Progress onto a intermediate or advanced level health and fitness apprenticeship (12 or 18 months), and gain further qualifications and experience working within a leisure centre environment that could secure your career future.
Should you discover a passion for sports science roles such as strength and conditioning, sports analysis, nutrition, sport psychology, sports therapy or even becoming a P.E teacher, then your natural pathway would be to study for a degree at university in your chosen area.
Should you make the most of your enrichment hours and build up a impressive CV of experience, additional qualifications and contacts, then there is nothing stopping you from finding full time employment within the sport and fitness industry.
A personal trainer creates one-on-one fitness programmes for their clients, motivating and guiding them to achieve their health and fitness goals. To become a personal trainer you would normally have achieved a Level 3 Diploma, have previous experience as a fitness instructor, hold relevant fitness and PT and first aid qualifications, public liability insurance and be a member of the National Register of Personal Trainers.
Fitness Instructors are in charge of creating exercise programmes to benefit the health and wellbeing of groups of clients (fitness classes) or on an individual basis (within a gym). To become an successful fitness instructor you would have achieved at Level 2 (minimum) qualification and relevant Fitness Instructing certificates and may enter the industry through an apprenticeship.
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
A strength and conditioning coach is a fitness and physical performance professional who uses exercise as a tool to specifically improve performances of individuals and teams within Sport. To secure a successful career in this industry you would require a sports science related degree (ideally masters), a professional coaching certificate and experience working as a sports coach or intern in a gym.
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
Sports nutritionists enhance athletes performances through developing healthy eating habits, using scientific research to optimise menus and recommend vitamins and supplements. A natural progression to become a sports nutritionist would be to achieve a degree (ideally masters), gain valuable post graduate work experience and be registered with the Nutrition Society.
Working as part of a wider team of trainers, manager and doctors a sport therapist provides treatment, rehabilitation and support on injury prevention. To maximise your chances of securing a role in this industry you would ideally require a sports therapy related degree accredited by the Society of Sport Therapists, work experience within coaching or fitness and up to date first aid certificate.
As a Sports Performance Analyst you would monitor, analyse and record sporting performances of an individual or team and liaise with coaches and athletes to ensure improvements in performance. To achieve a career in this sector a typical pathway would be onto university to study for a Sports & Exercise Science or relevant degree.
Working as part of a team Leisure Attendants/Assistants are vital in making sure leisure and fitness centres are run as the best they can be, engage with local communities in providing leisure, exercise and fitness services. A typical pathway for many entering this profession is to achieve a relevant level 3 diploma qualification and then gain an apprenticeship within the industry.
PE teachers are responsible for running physical education lessons primarily at secondary schools, teaching children about the fundamentals of fitness, and the rules of a range of sports. A typical pathway to become a PE teacher would be to progress to university to study for a undergraduate degree, followed by A PGCE which can be done specifically in Physical Education.
Leisure centre managers are responsible for every aspect of the day-to-day running of facilities dedicated to health and fitness, sports and leisure. Pathways to succeed in this role vary and can be through obtaining a degree at university, or progressing with a level 3 diploma and securing an apprenticeship and working your way to the top!
